Ask Floridians, Not Politicos, About DeSantis

But as a Floridian, I disagree with political consultant Alex Castellanos. Ms. Noonan quotes him as saying that “the problem for Ron” is that people feel the governor “does not like us.” My friends and I find Mr. DeSantis friendly and quite likable, if misled by his own political consultants. If the governor aspires to higher office, then I believe the route to the presidency is to act presidential. End the attacks on Disney. Reel in the combative attorneys and lobbyists. But as a Floridian, I disagree with political consultant Alex Castellanos. Ms. Noonan quotes him as saying that “the problem for Ron” is that people feel the governor “does not like us.” My friends and I find Mr. DeSantis friendly and quite likable, if misled by his own political consultants.
If the governor aspires to higher office, then I believe the route to the presidency is to act presidential. End the attacks on Disney. Reel in the combative attorneys and lobbyists. Find a way to make peace with Disney outside the courts, even if it modestly deflates Florida’s or Mr. DeSantis’s reputation. The current approach will not succeed.

Mr. DeSantis won re-election by 19 percentage points, the largest margin by any Florida governor in 40 years. Apparently, those who know Mr. DeSantis’s governance best are just fine with his ability to explain his thinking and are sophisticated enough to put substance over form, namely, whom he may or may not appear to like.

I pretty much agree with Ms. Noonan regarding President Biden and former President Trump’s rematch in 2024. The only way either one can win is to run against the other.

Leland, N.C. Years ago, my wife and I tried to get our 6-year-old son to wear something nicer than his “Star Wars” T-shirt to church. We laid out two shirts on his bed and asked him to choose one of them to wear. He looked at the choices and then looked at us and said, “Those aren’t the right choices.” Today, I have a better understanding of what he meant.
