Why does America think Europe is a country?

Half of American public high school graduates can't point out the United States on a map, and you're asking why they think the continent of Europe is a country? If that statement didn't explain it, it's because most American students are not taught geography… or much of anything else. Seriously, most people my age are completely ignorant about pretty much everything. #notall but way too many.
