Drivers have dragged climate activists off the roads in Berlin as the biggest blockade yet hit dozens of streets across the German capital.

At least two people in front of a blockade on the city ring dragged protesters from the asphalt on Monday morning, video posted to Twitter by the Letzte Generation organisation showed.

At another point in the west of the city a car rolled over the foot of a protester while the driver got out of the vehicle to berate him for blocking the street.

The protest group, who are calling for Germany to take tougher action to hit its carbon reduction goals, say that their 800 supporters have descended on the capital for mass protests that will bring the city “to a stand still.”

The activists say that they will keep the protest up until the government agrees to their demand for citizen’s councils to find solutions to tackling climate change.

According to Berlin's police department, close to 40 streets in the capital had been hit by blockade by midday on Monday and “individual cases” of drivers attacking protesters had been reported.
