Rather than issue a justified criticism of the Internal Revenue Service for delays in processing “millions” of Employee Retention Credit claims, J.D. Vance goes on offense (“Meet the New IRS, Same as the Old IRS,” op-ed, Aug. 18). But a simple conversation with leadership in the accounting profession would inform Sen. Vance that a staggering percentage of those millions of ERC claims are based on bogus interpretations of the criteria for claiming the credit.

Billions of Covid-relief funds for small businesses and individuals have already proved to be fraudulent. Processing of those ERC claims as Mr. Vance demands would only add to the massive fraud on the taxpayers that he wants to protect.

Instead of pushing his knee-jerk “populist” ideology, Mr. Vance might use his Yale education to do some homework.
