LE BOURGET, France—Indian discount airline Indigo agreed to buy 500 Airbus jets, marking the largest commercial jet deal in civil-aviation history as travel rebounds following the pandemic.

The order for the A320 family of narrow-body aircraft is worth $50 billion at the most recently available list prices before customary discounts.

The agreement came Monday on the first day of the Paris Air Show, an annual aviation-industry trade show typically punctuated with deals touted by rivals Airbus and .

Indigo Chief Executive Pieter Elbers said the deal highlights the growth potential of the Indian aviation market. It would more than double its current fleet size of some 300 aircraft. The planes are scheduled for delivery between 2030 and 2035.

“We believe there’s still plenty of room to grow domestic and even more so international,” Elbers said.

The Indigo deal surpasses in size an agreement by another Indian carrier, Air India, earlier this year to buy a total of 470 aircraft from both Airbus and its American rival Boeing.

The large deals reflect a surge in air-travel demand following the Covid-19 pandemic. Aircraft manufacturers have struggled to deliver jets on time as they face various supply-chain and regulator issues.
