At least 15 people were killed Thursday in a collision between a semi truck and a bus in central Canada, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

The crash occurred at approximately 11:40 a.m. local time on the Trans-Canada Highway near the town of Carberry, west of Winnipeg, in the province of Manitoba.

The bus was carrying approximately 25 people, authorities said. At least 10 people were taken to area hospitals. The drivers of both vehicles survived the initial crash, RCMP Superintendent Rob Lasson said.

Assistant Commissioner Rob Hill, commanding officer of Manitoba’s RCMP, said many of the passengers in the bus were older people. It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the crash, which occurred at the intersection of two highways. Officials haven’t yet released the names of the victims.

“I’m so sorry. We cannot give you the definitive answers you need more quickly,” he said.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the incident was “incredibly tragic.”

“I cannot imagine the pain those affected are feeling, but Canadians are here for you,” he said.
