The latest New York Times/Siena College poll, which shows Donald Trump leading Joe Biden in five of six key swing states, shocked the Democratic establishment. Some analysts urged Mr. Biden to step down; others warned him to wake up. Many responded by questioning the survey’s accuracy or denying its significance. This response is mostly misguided.
No doubt, some of the data represent mind-boggling shifts after the results of the 2020 election. The poll indicates that Mr. Biden is leading Mr. Trump by a modest 8 points among Hispanics and by a single point among voters under 30, while 22% of African-Americans support Mr. Trump, compared with an average of 8% for Republican candidates over the past six presidential elections.
