DeSantis, RFK Jr. and What Made Florida Great

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis stated that, if elected President, he would consider unleashing Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on some of our public-health agencies that have been dominated by Big Pharma for decades. Your editorial “Ron DeSantis at a Crossroads” (July 28) pooh-poohs this excellent idea, saying, “Running against the measles vaccine is not a platform that will excite suburban America.”

For those who understand the polluting role Big Pharma has played, and the appeal of properly focused public-health agencies, Mr. DeSantis’s determination to uproot such legalized corruption is welcome. It is also credible, given the governor’s unmatched Covid record.

Finally, it is a mistake to restate the narrative that RFK Jr. is “anti-vaccine.” His position on the implementation and use of vaccines is much more nuanced, based in data, and not ultimately anti-vax at all.

Mr. Cuccinelli, the founder of Never Back Down PAC, which supports Mr. DeSantis, was acting deputy secretary at the Department of Homeland Security, 2019-21, and a member of the President’s Coronavirus Task Force.

Americans aren’t pouring over the Florida border seeking asylum from progressive states. Rather, once employers allowed staff to work from home, who would stay in the chilly North when they could spend their working lives in sunny Florida? No personal income tax was a bonus.

Mr. DeSantis’ big re-election win might not seem so impressive if you consider that Florida is no longer competitive and that his opponent was very weak—a former Republican who is now a Democrat and had no campaign funds. He appeared to have been abandoned by the state and national Democratic Party.

Mr. DeSantis may have had a slow start, but don’t count him out. He is a great administrator who gets things done, and he has youth and integrity on his side. To offer conservative policies without President Trump’s vulgarities and baggage is fine with a lot of conservatives. I have seen Mr. DeSantis speak about the need to be energy independent, rebuild the military and pursue school choice. Let us hope he makes that case clearly, because many voters would stay home if the choice is between Presidents Biden and Trump.

I was a huge DeSantis supporter until he signed the six-week abortion bill. We already had 15 weeks, which everyone in Florida could live with. Mr. DeSantis needs to surround himself with better advisers to control his message. He is the right age and most of his ideas are good. Mr. DeSantis, stick with what made you popular in Florida.
