A Hong Kong man says he was handed a threatening ultimatum by his mainland wife to either hand over a chunk of his mother’s HK$20 million (US$2.5 million) inheritance or face being divorced.

Social media in the city has been enraged after seeing the man’s April 17 post outlining his plight on the discussion.com.hk online forum, replies to which urged him to “tolerate her no more”.

The man, who goes by the name @Kungjandaibacin, said his wife, whom he married in mainland China five years ago, asked him to split a HK$20 million inheritance left by his recently deceased mother into three equal parts so that she could share it with him and his elder sister.

Her justification for the demand was that the money would be used to pay for the education of their two children and the cost of moving into a bigger flat than their current public housing rental unit.

Real estate in Hong Kong is among the most expensive in the world.

The latest average home price in Hong Kong was HK$15,095 (US$2,000) per square foot, according to Midland Realty, one of the city’s largest property agencies. While more expensive, privately purchased properties tend to be larger than those in the public sector.

After offering her reasons, the man said his wife threatened to divorce him and take away his share if he refused to cooperate.

He said he was unwilling to split the money three ways because he and his sister, who grew up in a single-parent family, were close and he wanted to be fair with her.

He said his mother had always taught them to put kinship first and not hurt each other over money.

The man also said he had been devoted financially to his wife and had given a betrothal gift of 128,000 yuan (US$18,500) to her family.

He had also covered the down payment for her family’s home in mainland China.

After they married, the man said he gave nearly all his salary to his wife, keeping just HK$1,500 a month to himself.

He added that his wife only became interested in money after they tied the knot.

One online observer said of the situation: “She loves money more than you”, to which the man replied that he did not want to be his wife’s “ATM machine” anymore and had decided to divorce her.

He added that he would let his sister look after the inheritance and get his share from her after the divorce.
