EVANSVILLE — An Evansville Police Department officer shot and killed a woman who was allegedly armed with a handgun Wednesday evening, an EPD spokesperson said.

Authorities have not publicly identified the woman.

The fatal shooting followed what EPD Sgt. Anna Gray described as two police runs on Evansville's South Side. In the early afternoon, a 911 caller reported a domestic disturbance that entailed a woman "throwing a fish tank out of a window," Gray said.

Officers left the scene after witnesses declined to speak to them, according to the EPD.

Around 6 p.m., a person dialed 911 a second time to report the woman who was previously involved in the domestic disturbance had begun walking in the direction of Caldwell Park while armed with a handgun.

"Around 6:09 p.m. the first responding officer, and the only officer on scene at that time, encountered the female in the 1700 block of South Evans," Gray told the Courier & Press. "The female did have a gun, and the officer did discharge his weapon."

Gray said the woman was struck by at least one bullet and collapsed. Officers utilized a police dog to "move the female away from the gun," according to Gray.

First responders, including paramedics, rendered aid to the woman but Gray said she was pronounced dead at the scene.

"That's kind of where we at right now in the investigation," Gray explained Wednesday night.

Gray said there would likely be a news conference Thursday to disclose additional information.
