A suspected triad member reversed into a motorcycle before driving off in his Mercedes-Benz with his door wide open and a police constable clinging to the side after being intercepted at a shopping centre in Hong Kong on Tuesday.

The plain-clothes constable fell from the car when it turned outside V City shopping centre in Tuen Mun at about 10.30am, suffering scratches to his limbs, a source familiar with the case said.

His two colleagues drew their guns and gave chase, but the gold car managed to flee.

About two hours later, police arrested a 34-year-old man at a public housing flat at Kin Sang Estate in the same district.

The suspect, believed to be a Sun Yee On triad member, was detained on suspicion of injuring a person by furious driving – an offence punishable by up to two years in jail.

At about 10.15am, police received a call from the driver of a delivery van, who claimed a Mercedes-Benz, carrying illegal drugs, pulled over on Tsun Wen Road at Tai Hing Estate in Tuen Mun.

The source said the Mercedes-Benz might have been used to deliver illegal drugs.

The car sped off when officers arrived. Police chased it but lost track of the vehicle.

The car was later found at one of the entrances of a shopping centre on Tuen Mun Heung Sze Wui Road and intercepted by an unmarked police car. Three plain-clothes officers left their vehicle and approached the Mercedes-Benz.

The source said the Mercedes-Benz, which had the driver-side door open, suddenly reversed, hitting a motorcycle and dragging along an officer standing next to the driver to ask him to turn off the engine. The constable then jumped onto the bottom of the door frame when the car sped off.

The drama was captured in an online video, showing the two other officers drawing their guns and giving chase.

The source said the constable clung to the Mercedes-Benz and fell off outside the mall when it was making a turn.

A police spokesman said the officer suffered scratches to his limbs and was taken to Tuen Mun Hospital for treatment.

Police said the motorcyclist was unhurt in the incident.

The source said police were still looking for the Mercedes-Benz.

As of Tuesday evening, the suspect was still being held for questioning.
