A 23-year-old Hong Kong woman arrested in March by national security police for alleged sedition is expected to appear in court on Friday, police have said.

The woman was accused of publishing seditious posts and photos on her Facebook page, including content said to have promoted Hong Kong independence and provoked hatred towards the central and city governments.

The force’s national security department said on Thursday that it had “officially laid a charge against the woman” and that she faced one count of “doing an act or acts with seditious intention”.

National security police arrested the woman, who has not been named, in Sau Mau Ping on March 8 after a tip-off.

It was alleged she had published seditious posts and pictures on social media.

Police said at the time she was suspected of inciting secession in breach of the national security law.

The case is expected to be mentioned at the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Police said that “doing an act or acts with seditious intention” was a serious crime and those convicted could face two years in jail for a first offence.

Hong Kong duo arrested on suspicion of perverting course of justice

The national security police have made several arrests in recent days.

In a separate case, the Post reported on Wednesday that a woman, 64, and a man, 30, had been arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.

The woman was among six people arrested last week on a separate charge of suspicion of conspiracy to commit forgery. The six are alleged to have forged signatures on documents.

The woman was said to have attempted to pervert the course of justice by trying to influence other defendants in the forgery case through a 30-year-old man.
