A Hong Kong father has faced an online backlash after he “dismembered” his son’s Mickey Mouse plush doll as punishment for “sloppy” schoolwork.

The furious rebuke came on a city parenting page hosted by Facebook called Parent Licenses, where online observers accused him of creating “childhood trauma”.

The man said he pulled apart his Primary One son’s Mickey Mouse plush toy to punish him for “sloppy” English, “gross” handwriting and poor school performance.

His post was flagged by one of the page’s 70,000 followers who described it as “horrific” and included screenshots of the father’s post.

The angry father said: “I came home tonight and asked my son to write the English words he had learned that day, but he only ‘sloppily’ wrote a few, and the handwriting was ‘gross’. He then told me he couldn’t write or remember the words.

“I had warned him that I would cut up one of his Mickey Mouse dolls. I had said before that I would give him another chance, but this time, I did not. I also told him that next time he does the same, I will dismember his favourite doll, which he always has with him.”

The father posted photos of his son holding the Mickey Mouse doll before he dismembered it and after he took it apart and taped to the door of his boy’s room.

The single father added: “I love and spoil him very much, but I am very strict about his learning abilities.”

Online observers were horrified by the man’s actions.

One said: “How horrible! This will traumatise the child for the rest of his life.”

“When I was a kid, my mum threw my favourite doll away in a fit of anger and I remember it to this day, but dismembering your son’s doll is unforgiveable,” said another.

Following the angry response, the father tried to defend himself by saying he just wanted his son to do well at school.

But his response failed to quell the wave of anger.

One observer gave an analytical response: “Your son has just started Primary One. Do you expect him to manage his time and discipline himself? If the child is lazy, I think it is the parent’s responsibility. As his father, you have to manage your emotions. Your child is still young. Grow up with your child!”
