Police tape surrounded playground equipment at the Southpark Apartments in South Franklinton Saturday night following a fatal hit-skip that killed a 4-year-old boy. Columbus police officers are still looking for the man they say was driving the vehicle that killed him.

A stolen Kia that struck and killed a 4-year-old playing with his mother at a South Franklinton apartment complex Saturday night was going about 40 mph at the time of the crash, according to a report.

The man accused of being behind the wheel in the fatal crash, 24-year-old Tyrell Shute of Mansfield, turned himself into police late Sunday morning and is expected to have his first court appearance in Franklin County Municipal Court Monday morning. He is charged with aggravated vehicular homicide.

Shute is accused of being the person behind the wheel of a 2015 Kia Soul when the crash occurred around 9 p.m. Saturday at the Southpark Apartments on Canonby Place.

The Kia had been reported stolen earlier Saturday from the 1300 block of Cromartie Lane in the Weinland Park neighborhood. According to the police report from the theft, between 11 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday, someone had broken the window to the vehicle, which was parked outside a residence.

According to the crash report, 4-year-old Yonis Kabiro Said was playing in a grassy area outside the building he and his mother lived in and was with his mother at the time. The Kia, which the crash report said was going about 40 mph, went over a curb, drove through the grassy area and struck Yonis. The posted speed limit in the area is 5 mph, according to the report.

The Kia kept going a short distance before stopping.

Columbus police officers who had been following the Kia, but were not actively pursuing it at the time of the crash, put Yonis into a cruiser and drove him to Nationwide Children's Hospital. Yonis was not able to survive his injuries.

Shute had fled the scene on foot and was not able to be located at the time the investigation began. A woman who was in the vehicle with Shute stayed at the scene and was not hurt, according to the crash report.

Shute turned himself into police on Sunday after charges were filed against him and police said they were actively searching for him. Shute is currently charged with aggravated vehicular homicide but additional charges could be filed at a later date.
