“Succession,” a drama about a cutthroat media mogul family that this year ended a four season run on HBO, led nominations for the 75th Emmy Awards with 27 nods, including in top categories like best drama, best actor and best actress.

“The Last of Us” followed with 24 nominations, with first-time nominations for its leads Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. “The White Lotus” nabbed 23 nominations and “Ted Lasso” garnered 21.

This year’s nominations ceremony is an unusual one. It comes as Hollywood is hobbled by an ongoing writers’ strike and the threat of a potential actors’ strike just hours away. Members of the Screen Actors Guild have authorized their leaders to call for a strike if a contract deal is not reached with Hollywood’s major studios by Wednesday night.

That would mean walking the picket lines with the Writers Guild of America, who have been on strike since May 2. That strike has halted many live-action TV and film projects for the foreseeable future. The fall TV season—when new and returning shows typically premiere—is still in flux, and loaded with reality shows that don’t require union writers.

Though the 2023 Emmy Awards are scheduled to be broadcast live on Sept. 18 on Fox, questions remain as to whether the ceremony will actually go forward while the WGA is striking, and especially if there is a combined SAG and WGA strike that continues into September.

Among the writers striking are the showrunners who helm the nominated series. Quinta Brunson, lead actress and writer behind the sitcom “Abbott Elementary,” which was nominated for outstanding comedy series, has been a vocal supporter of the writers’ strike, and “Saturday Night Live” stars have been spotted on the picket lines.

“We hope the ongoing guild negotiations can come to an equitable and swift resolution,” Television Academy chair Frank Scherma said during his introduction to the broadcast.

The final season of “Succession” is set up for a three-way battle between its lead actors—Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin.

Stars of “The White Lotus” and “Succession” also dominated supporting actor and actress categories. Actors from the two shows split the category for best supporting actor in a drama 50-50, while only two of the eight slots for best supporting actress went to actresses from other shows.

HBO’s ‘The White Lotus’ received 23 nominations.

Other firsts included lead actor nominations for “Beef” stars Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, as well as “Wednesday,” a Tim Burton-produced Netflix

series based on “The Addams Family,” whose 12 nominations included a first time nod for its star Jenna Ortega.

“Vanderpump Rules” was also a first-time nominee with a nod for best unscripted reality program.

Among the snubs were “Yellowstone,” the wildly popular saga of a cattle ranch along Yellowstone National Park that stars Kevin Costner, and its successful spinoff shows such as “1923” that stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. None of the interconnected shows, created by Taylor Sheridan, garnered any nominations, despite reports that Sheridan lobbied the premiere episode of “1923” for consideration. A representative for Sheridan did not return a request for comment.
