Trump dominates Republican field in South Carolina, poll finds
Former President Donald Trump is dominating the Republican field in South Carolina with almost half of Republican primary voters favoring the former president, according to a Washington Post-Monmouth University poll. The poll found that 46 percent of potential Republican primary voters in South Carolina support Trump while the state’s former governor, Nikki Haley, stands in second place at 18 percent. Ten percent support Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) and 9 percent back Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, further displaying DeSantis’ struggles to gain popularity in the GOP primary. Five percent of those surveyed support former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. Former Vice President Mike Pence and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy both stand at 3 percent while former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson stands at 2 percent and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum received less than 1 percent. Thursday’s poll is consistent with national polls showing Trump as the GOP frontrunner. Thursday’s poll is consistent with national polls showing Trump as the GOP frontrunner. A Wall Street Journal poll earlier this month found Trump led with 59 percent of surveyed voters.
Trump has robust establishment support in South Carolina, where he secured endorsements from the state’s governor, senior senator and three representatives.
The poll also found that 54 percent of those surveyed say Trump is definitely or probably the strongest candidate to beat President Joe Biden, while 42 percent think another candidate would be stronger.
The Post-Monmouth poll was conducted Sept. 6-11 among a random sample of 506 potential GOP primary voters in South Carolina. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 4.6 percentage points.
