Ukrainian man arrested in Russia for allegedly attempting to poison flight school graduates

In Armavir, Russia, a native of Melitopol tried to poison military pilots with a cake in an attempt allegedly organized by Ukraine’s SBU security service, the Russian newspaper Kommersant alleged on Oct. 24.

The Armavir City Court arrested 32-year-old Yehor Semenov for 15 days under a report of disorderly conduct. He is now suspected of attempting to poison flight school graduates, which the Russian authorities are choosing to treat as a terrorist attack.

According to Kommersant, on Oct. 21, Armavir flight school graduates celebrated the 20th anniversary of their graduation in a restaurant in the city. There were 77 people in the room at the time.

In the midst of the banquet, a courier showed up at the restaurant and delivered a 20-kilogram cake and several boxes of whiskey. The courier explained that he had brought gifts from one of the graduates who allegedly could not make it to the meeting.

The courier quickly left without telling the attendants the name of the sender. This seemed strange to the graduates, so they did not eat the cake, although they did cut it. Later, the pilots reported the situation to the Federal Security Service (FSB).

The FSB claims that the cake and whiskey were tainted and that the attempt on the Russian pilots was allegedly organized by SBU. Russian authorities allege that the courier was Yehor Semenov, who had recently been living in Moscow Oblast.

Graduates and former teachers of the flight school did not comment on the incident. One user in the school’s Internet forum originally expressed doubts about the incident, but later confirmed that the incident did occur.

So far, no official comment has been made.
