We’re hiring an experienced features writer

The Economist Group is the leading source of analysis on international business and world affairs. We deliver our information through a range of formats, from newspapers and magazines to conferences and electronic services. What ties us together is the objectivity of our opinion, the originality of our insight and our advocacy of economic and political freedom around the world.

The Economist and 1843 magazine are looking for an experienced features journalist, based in the United States. The successful candidate will travel around the country, regularly producing human-interest stories on American politics, culture and society. We will be particularly focused on the 2024 election campaign and you will be full of ideas for fresh and intriguing ways of covering it.

1843 magazine is The Economist’s features arm, publishing award-winning narrative journalism and telling human stories behind the headlines. We are looking for someone to write news features on a regular basis. There may also be an opportunity to write longer features.

The successful candidate will be an excellent writer and self-starting reporter with an eye for a story and a feel for what The Economist’s readers are interested in. Strong news judgement is crucial, as is a talent for telling other people’s stories—be it a federal judge or an ordinary voter in a swing state.

They must be enterprising and self-sufficient: most of the 1843 team is based at The Economist’s offices in London. They will be expected to work with The Economist’s audio and film departments, and to collaborate with writers from The Economist’s US section.

Required:

• Feature writing experience
• Strong interest in US politics, culture and society
• Strong interest in talking (and listening) to people
• Willingness to travel

Please submit a cover letter containing three ideas for 1843 features (one should be election-related and one about business, finance or technology), resumé and clippings to [email protected] by September 3rd.

The Economist Group values diversity. We are committed to equal opportunities and creating an inclusive environment for all our employees. We welcome applicants regardless of ethnic origin, national origin, gender, race, colour, religious beliefs, disability, sexual orientation or age.
