A Hong Kong husband has created a buzz on social media by revealing what he described as the mistreatment and exploitation he is forced to endure at home.

The man, who did not reveal his age, posted his complaints on the popular anonymous forum DiscussHK on April 30.

He said of his family: “They don’t talk to me, they don’t eat with me, they only look for me when they need money, or they look for me to pay for their meals. At other times, they treat me as if I am invisible. I have a feeling of isolation. It’s more like being a tenant than a member of a family,” he said.

He also outlined his financial situation: “I earn HK$60,000 (US$7,600) a month, not much but not too bad,” he said, surprising many online.

One social media observer said: “You earn HK$60,000 a month, and you have to suffer at the hands of your family? Why don’t you move out? Why do you need to see your family if you don’t want to? If you want to do your filial duty, transfer money to your parents automatically every month.”

Another participant in the forum said:“If it were me, I would have moved out long time ago.”

The poster replied saying:“It’s not my parents. It’s my wife and kids.”

Then an observer commented: “They don’t communicate with you or care about you. This relationship is worse than if you were a stranger.”

Later, another commenter suggested that the poster should move out: “If your personalities are not compatible, find a reason to move out. Meeting each other is easy, but living together is difficult.”

Of the more than 30 comments the post attracted, some shared similar experiences.

One said: “I have the same problem as you. If my family doesn’t eat together, we don’t talk to each other. We treat each other as if we are not there. However, it is too expensive to rent a separate apartment, so we have no choice.”

Another suggested: “You need to take the initiative to improve your relationship with your family.”

The poster did not reveal the reason for the tension in his family.
