Hong Kong lawmaker Bill Tang becomes latest victim in recent spate of break-ins when burglar steals HK$500 from his home

Hong Kong lawmaker Bill Tang Ka-piu became the latest victim in a recent spate of break-ins when a burglar broke into his New Territories home in the early hours of Thursday and stole HK$500 (US$63).

Police were called at 3.47am when Tang’s neighbour saw a man acting suspiciously outside a flat at the Parc Versailles housing estate on Mui Shu Hang Road in Tai Po.

The suspect had fled by the time officers arrived. Police searched the area but came up empty-handed.

Without revealing the identity of the male tenant involved, a police spokesman said the victim’s flat had been ransacked, and about HK$500 and a credit card had been stolen in the incident.

Tang, of the pro-establishment Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions, confirmed his flat was burgled and said the glass door, which led to his flat’s front yard, had been opened, and a credit card and some cash had been stolen from a wallet.

The legislator said he was shocked by the incident, adding: “This area is relatively harmonious and safe.”

He said the glass door was usually unlocked. After the incident, he said he would enhance security measures, such as installing surveillance cameras or anti-burglary sensors.

Tang said he believed police would spare no effort to investigate and bring the suspect to justice.

Hong Kong businessman loses HK$1.8 million in valuables, cash in home burglary

Between April 13 and 24, more than HK$3.4 million in cash and valuables were stolen from three flats in the Sha Tin district.

On April 22, police arrested three men from mainland China soon after they allegedly stole HK$13,000 worth of valuables from a public housing flat in Tsing Yi.

The force said the three were believed to be linked to another five burglary cases involving HK$350,000 in valuables and cash stolen from five flats in Central, Wan Chai and Eastern districts between April 5 and 20.
